THE MAKING OF A CHAUVET CONVERT: MORNING STAR MINISTRIES’ SUMMER TOUR 07

Leonard Jones, praise leader of Morning Star Ministries, was looking for a way to stay a little cooler and avoid the “brutal heat of PAR cans day after day” during a planned 35-day summer tour from Kansas to California.  Attracted to the “cooler stages LEDs could provide,” Jones asked Eye Dialogue’s lighting designer Jack Kelly to design a mobile stage-lighting rig that used LEDs exclusively, while remaining budget conscious.  They decided to go with CHAUVET, albeit with reservations.  Kelly hesitated initially because he was not too familiar with the entire range of CHAUVET products and feared the lights might not withstand the rigor of touring.  But a sample of the COLORado™ 3 washlight won him over with an IP65-rated metal case, 54 one-watt LEDs in three pods, and price tag “under a grand.”

“It was everything I always wanted in a fixture,” Kelly says. His rig design reflects his newfound belief. Kelly used CHAUVET LED fixtures exclusively, complementing 4 COLORado™ 3’s with 20 smaller, more traditional looking COLORado™ 1’s, each featuring 36 (1-watt) LEDs in one compact pod. This, Kelly says, gave him “all the tools needed for a waterproof theatrical mobile-stage lighting rig.”

The units’ RGB mixing capability allowed Kelly to utilize fewer fixtures, over a traditional PAR rig, simplifying setup and focusing. The COLORado™ fixtures come with waterproof jumpers for DMX and power, a must for reliable outdoor performance. The ability to daisy-chain multiple units made it possible to power the entire stage with just two runs for power and DMX.

The result is, according to Kelly, a lighting scheme that provides “strong illumination, washing the entire stage area, while maintaining a simple and symmetrical layout that looks marvelous running color sweeps and chases.”

With a strong presence on multiple tours this summer, CHAUVET is breaking down barriers and making true believers out of the touring industry.

CHAUVET IN ACTION:

Krystal’s: Standing out from the Crowd

Queens, NY- You don’t just feel the beat, you see it at Krystal’s Night Club, thanks to the installation of 32 (CHAUVET) COLORtube™ EQs mounted vertically in frosted glass columns surrounding the main floor.  The tubes graphically display the audio spectrum of the sound system for all to see, truly bouncing to the beat. The effect puts the crowd into the center of the action, adding to the energetic feel of the location, while remaining “a real workhorse…that stands out from all the rest,” says lighting designer Bernard Tu of Lighting & Sound Consultants, LLC.

Ambiance and mood lighting are accomplished by 4 (Coemar) Prowash 250lx, and 55 (CHAUVET) LED-fitted COLORsplash™ Jr. wash lights mounted behind the frosted glass front of the main bar. Each light is controlled separately via DMX interface, allowing for true color scrolling and chase effects.  The extensive use of LED lighting has three advantages: power consumption is limited, little heat is generated, and the bar will never have to be dismantled to replace a burned out bulb or fried gel sheet..

Two 20” mirror balls, PAR cans, DMX strobes, and a powerful fogger add visual interest and excitement within the 9,000-square foot location.  But it is the edgy LED-fitted fixtures that most definitely win patrons over, says Tu: “Both the EQ tubes and Color Splash™ Jr.'s are the main attraction of the venue, next to the beautiful women!”
