First Baptist Church of Marco Island: Inspired Synergy
Marco Island, FL- February marked the opening of the new, 500-seat First Baptist Church of Marco Island. Brawner & Associates was tasked with providing turnkey design & installation services for the project including lighting, audio, video, lighting, digital signage, scenic elements, acoustics and motorized rigging systems Brawner & Associates designed the entire space in conjunction with Audio/Video partners, SG Integration.
At the core of the design is a scenic wall used to create vivid backgrounds behind the pulpit. The wall works in unison with a soft fabric ceiling. “We were looking for a background that would be versatile, something with lots of depth and dimension,” says Donnie Brawner, Senior Consultant. “It had to be great for the live message, but also something that serves well for video & television. Back at our office in mid-2006, the wall with matching ceiling was elected as the winning solution.” The church is thrilled with the combination and the endless lighting options. “It’s really going to give them the ability to tone the message, or theme a message series,” states Brawner. |
| Lighting Designer Ron Robertson explains the lighting challenges. “The design of the wall required strong side-light from multiple color changing fixtures. We set our sights on a product that would be an inexpensive, small unit with a powerful punch and smooth dimming. The CHAUVET® COLORado™ 1 units did an incredible job. Due to the focus on video, we were looking for a product with high refresh rates to eliminate flicker with the camera’s eye. CHAUVET ® had just upgraded theirs and they are great lights.” |
The plywood / Formica wrapped wall is lit with (16) COLORado™ 1 units from the side with additional front lighting units. There are also (4) High End X-Spots providing texture to the wall. The stretched fabric ceiling is lit with (3) COLORado™ 1 units per panel. The main stage lighting is made up with multiple ETC source four products. |
“The client was very excited about the LED lighting,” Brawner says. “LED lighting meets Green building initiatives and allows for rich color saturation without the power consumption, lamp replacement, and maintenance costs of standard lighting. They were thrilled to welcome this new technology and benefit from its many advantages. We have several clients that we are going to be taking in this direction.” |
The motorized batten system (by Texas Scenic) includes (3) lighting positions and (2) scenic pipes, housing a 16’ X 9’ screen and a self-illuminating, dimensional LED cross unit. Other lighting positions included four side light cove positions and trusses hung between ceiling fabrics. |
Brawner’s design team called for an acoustic island ceiling, built by scenic company ID3, over the entire auditorium which acted as a masking device for the front lighting positions, audio speakers & ETC par houselights. |

L&M Sound and COLORado™ I Get Festive at the Manor
Secaucus, NJ- For the grand opening of the Manor rehabilitation facility, lighting designers at L&M Sound solved the challenge of creating a festive atmosphere in the sterile environment of a hospital with CHAUVET COLORado™ 1 wash lights. In a test of its IP66 rating, one unit was submerged in a fountain, transforming it into a striking centerpiece of ever-changing hues. The remaining COLORado™ 1's bathed walls in a creative use of contrasting and complementary colors.
| *Note: The COLORado™ 1 unit is not rated for a submersed application. Using the fixture in this manner is not recommended and will void the manufacturer’s warranty. |
